03/04/10- Ocean City Maryland Go Karts!

One of our families favorite things to do when we stay at The Ellis Beach House at Ocean City Maryland is GO KARTS!  The girls, the guys, the adults, and the kids love it.  Who doesn't enjoy Go Karts?!  The feel of the speed in the open cart, the competition, the tight corner turns, and a little bumping...  <<Don't tell on me but I always BUMP my competition!  If we agree not to bump before the race starts, I am going to bump you anyway.  I am surprised that they let me back on the cars year after year with my crazy driving.>>

The speed/competition lovers in your family will have a super time at Ocea
Ocean City Maryland Go Kartsn City Maryland’s go kart tracks. There is something for all driving levels. There is a choice of three Go Kart racing facilities at Ocean City Maryland.

**Alert- My wife and I have kids and have to watch the vacation budget ourselves, and this is NOT going to be an inexpensive event.  This is going to be around $20 per person, perhaps more, and perhaps less.  Some times We spend about $20-25, and get 3 rides for me and my son together in 1 car.  They do sell arm bands, that allow you to do unlimited rides for 2 hours or so.  Again, this is a more expensive event.  It is usually good fun for 1-2 hours.**

1. You’ll find the fastest go karts at Baja Amusements , 410-213-BAJA, 1 Mile West of Route 50 Bridge Ocean City Maryland.  At Baja the racers can choose among six tracks. For kids eight and older, there is Family Tracks and the Family Grand Prix where they can drive themselves and acquire car and racing skills. Children under eight can ride free with an adult. Things change from year to year so please call ahead.  Coupons are available on their website to save you a couple of bucks.

2.  For the experienced drivers, there is a competitive stock car track and a challenging oval track as well as Road Racer, a 1/2 mile track with high banked turns and twisting corners. For the largest selection go to Speedworld  at the Jolly Roger Amusement Park, 410-289-4902, 30th St. & Coastal Highway Ocean City Maryland. You will find more than 300 state-of-the-art go karts and will be able to choose from a selection of 14 tracks geared toward families, kiddies and experienced drivers.  Things change from year to year so please call ahead.  Coupons are available on their website to save you a couple of bucks.

3.  The best prices are at Ocean City Maryland Grand Prix , 410-213-1278, Route 50 in West Ocean City Maryland. Choose from seven exciting go kart tracks.  Things change from year to year so please call ahead.  Coupons are available on their website to save you a couple of bucks.

02/25/10- Ocean City Maryland Bottle-Nosed Dolphins

Anyone that has ever visited Ocean City Maryland’s beaches or stayed at the EllisBeachHouse has probably seen the dolphins that swim in the water right off the beach.  These dolphin shows are unscheduled, free, and provided by nature.  Just about every time we go to the beach we get to watch the dolphins.  They swim anywhere from 50 feet to 150 feet off the water shore, right at the beach.

Ocean City Maryland DolphinsThe dolphins are going up the shore, or coming down the shore, who knows.  Just keep your eyes peeled, and if the other visitors at the beach see them, you will probably hear them talking and pointing.

This is a nice posting that I found on www.BeachNet.com:  One of our family's favorite pastimes when the water warms up in summer is watching for the Atlantic Bottle-Nosed Dolphin, which can be seen nearly every day a hundred or so yards off the coast from Lewes, Delaware south to Ocean City, Maryland.

Many days, they simply swim past, with only a fin bobbing up and down. Some days, though, you'll see a sizeable portion of their bodies as they splash their "flukes", or back fins, on the water. If you're lucky, you'll even catch them on those rare, playful occasions when they jump completely out of the water in a dramatic flip.

My family revels in spotting the Atlantic Bottle-Nosed Dolphins as they swim by. Both of our most memorable dolphin-watching moments have been caught on video.

A few years ago, my father-in-law miraculously taped a dolphin flipping several feet out of the water. We'd never seen anything like it before and we haven't seen anything like it since.

The other time, on a cruise on the tall ship Jolly Rover out of Lewes, we came on a school of dozens of dolphins playing off the point of Cape Henlopen State Park. Because we were under sail, the dolphins moved within just a few yards of the ship, giving the 50 passengers on board a lengthy, up-close view.

One moment not caught on tape occurred last summer in the aftermath of one of August's many tropical storms and hurricanes. A teenage boy boogie boarding in Bethany Beach got the shock of a lifetime when, as he caught a wave, a dolphin almost brushed him as it swam through the wave. It scared the living daylights out of that kid, who thought for sure those fins belonged to something far more menacing than a dolphin.

The bottle-nosed dolphin species sometimes shows curiosity towards humans in or near water. Occasionally, they rescue injured divers by raising them to the surface. They also do this to help injured members of their own species. In November 2004, a dramatic report of dolphin intervention came from New Zealand. Four lifeguards, swimming 100 meters (328 ft) off the coast near Whangarei, were approached by a shark (reportedly a Great White Shark). Bottlenose dolphins herded the swimmers together and surrounded them for forty minutes, preventing the shark from attacking, as they slowly swam to shore.

02/4/10- Ocean Downs Racetrack, Ocean City, MD/Ocean Pines, MD

If you have never been to a horse racing track, you life it not complete without visiting the Ocean Downs Racetrack.  If you have been to a horse racing track before then you know how much fun it can be.

Ocean Downs Racetrack is for LIVE HARNESS HORSE RACING.  Admission is free so everyone can afford this show.  Wagering is allowed, and can be done with as little as $2.

See the picture below, but this is where the driver is sitting in a small cart/chariot behind the horse.  The driver is not sitting on the horse.  On a given race night, there will be 6 or 8 or 10 races.  And the races will be spaced 15 or 20 minutes apart.

Ocean Downs Maryland Horse Racing Picture

The racing season is from June 19th to August 28th 2010.  Click on this link for a full calendar of Ocean Down Racetrack dates, as there are not races every night.

Our Ellis Beach House is located roughly 7 minutes by car from the Ocean Downs Racetrack, so it could not be any more convenient.

This is great entertainment for people of all ages.  For the kids, the horses and drivers themselves are amazing.  Before each race the master of ceremonies person always welcomes the crowd on horseback and allows the kids to get close to her horse.  And, everyone can pick a horse and cheer it on if they have wagered any money or not.  Great fun.

For the adults that want to spend $2 or more per race, you can enjoy the chance of winning a little extra money.  If there are 6 races and you lost $2 per race, you would only have lost $12, and you would have had 2 hours of fun.  And, again remember, the admission is free.  Click here to see the Ocean Downs Wagering Format.

Ocean Downs has refreshments (drinks, beer, wine, ice cream), and a couple restaurants.  It is great fun and it is all only minutes away from the Ellis Beach House.

01/26/10-  Vacation at Ocean City, MD and Stay at Ocean Pines, MD

My wife and I have been vacationing at Ocean City Maryland for more than 11 years together and 4 or 5 years separately.  So, that totals up to over 30 combined years of Ocean City Maryland experience.  We have stayed at several of the Ocean City Maryland hotels, and also at the houses in the neighboring housing development of Ocean Pines.  We eventually purchased our vacation beach house rental in Ocean Pines, and you can see it by visiting, www.EllisBeachHouse.com

The advantages of vacationing at Ocean City Maryland over Virginia Beach, or North and South Carolina beaches and New Jersey beaches are significant.  The 2 major advantages are that Ocean City has more fun packed per square foot than any of the other beaches listed.  It is all packed into 1 great location that is easy to get around with minimum trouble and time.  The second advantage is that OCMD has one of the shortest travel times to the following states-MD, VA, DE, PA, NJ, NY, and many more.

But, this article is about Ocean Pines and not specifically about Ocean City Maryland, so let me switch gears.  Here is a quick summary of why you want to stay at Ocean Pines-

  1. Get away from the constant, never ending hustle and bustle of Ocean City Maryland proper.  I love OCMD, don’t get me wrong, but at the end of a long day at the beach or boardwalk, I just want some peace and quite.  That will be hard to find at OCMD, but peace and quite is available in abundance at Ocean Pines, MD, and specifically at The Ellis Beach House.
  2. Use the Ocean Pines Beach Clubhouse on 49th street across from Seacrets and enjoy the beach, a pool, dressing rooms, restaurant, bar, showers, volley ball, bathrooms, and much more.
  3. I have to park the bus on the idea of Bathrooms at the beach for a moment.  Do you know what a pain it is to go to the beach if you don’t have easy access to a nice clean bathroom.  Not good.  And if you have a family with you and kids that need to use the bathroom constantly.  If you have ever had to use normal public bathrooms, you know it can be gross.  Bathrooms at a beach are a major consideration.  See pictures of the Ocean Pines Beach Clubhouse Bathrooms.
  4. More space, more amenities, and more for your dollar at Ocean Pines.  If you stay at OCMD proper you are going to be paying a premium for your accommodations, and you are going to get a 1 or 2 bedroom set up.  At a vacation rental property like ours, you are going to get living rooms, and sunrooms and significantly more space.  So, overall it will be a better value.
  5. The drunken idiot factor.  I have seen many a vacationer who has had way to much to drink and decides to scream like a wild banshee in the middle of the night out in the street.  Or is runOcean City Maryland Drunken Idiotning down the hotel hallway at 5am in the morning with his buddy on a push cart.  The only thing close to a drunken idiot that I have ever seen in Ocean Pines is perhaps squirrels chasing each other up a tree.  Oh, there was this line of ducks that stopped traffic while they crossed the street.  (Renegades!)  You get the point.  If you are 22 and younger, then OCMD proper is the place for you.  If you are a bit older, or a bit more refined, or have a family, or have kids you are going to love a house like our in Ocean Pines.    (PS, the picture to the right, is not of me or anyone that I know, it is just some random citizen that is modeling a combination of bad judgment and too much alcohol.)----->

Good luck with planning your vacation, please contact me or Rachel if you have questions, or are interested in getting more information about our OCMD vacation beach house rental.

06/05/09-  Top 10 things you should do ASAP when you get to OC.

2) Stop counting calories. Ocean City restaurants serve up boardwalk fries, Maryland crab cakes, hot, fresh pizza, juicy Delmarva fried chicken, sweet saltwater taffy and some of the finest dining in the mid-Atlantic. Give your diet the day off.

3) Catch the sun's ups and downs. Sunsets are spectacular on the inlet as the sun sinks down toward the bay. And a glorious sunrise on the Ocean City beach is worth getting up early for.

4) Go back in time. Explore Ocean City, Maryland's colorful history at the Life-Saving Station Museum, or take a walking tour of our historic downtown area.

8) Drop a line or grab some crabs, free. Take advantage of the abundance of opportunity to teach your kids to fish or crab at one of our free piers and fishing areas on the bay. Or if you are up for the big catch of the day, check out deep sea fishing excursions or stay close to shore on a bayside headboat.

05/29/09-  Best Ice Cream and Milk Shakes in OC MD?

I Love Milk Shakes! Who has the best milk shakes and ice cream in Ocean City MD? What is their best flavor?

    *

Dumser's is my favorite . Of course flavor is a personal preference. I am a black raspberry fan : ) If you venture to Berlin , check out Rayne's Reef on Main St. Old style malted milk shakes to please any palate : ) MMMmmm

- ocsunguy

    *

Kohr Brother's has the best soft serve ice cream. For sundaes and shakes, Dumser's is definitely the best!

- OCObsessed

    *

We have always had Dumser but this year tried Kohr's Brothers and it is amazing. The flavor is wonderful and the staff was very helpful.

- bradynsmom

    *

You can see that Dumser's is definitely the popular spot for ice cream treats in OC, and I would agree. I have never been disappointed by any of the Dumser's stores. Just to throw in another option, the ice cream shop at the Grand Hotel has Hershey's ice cream and their shakes are pretty good too.
- OCBigT

    *

Dumser's has good milkshakes
- lwold

    *

Dumsers or Alaska Stand- Everything they have is delicious!
- Gettysburg1

    *

DUMSER's is probably the best... and their bannana is very good :)
- ocheaven

    *

The absolute best for me are Dumser's!!! I like a simple, but delicious vanilla malt! The 1950s style drive-up decor and great service top it all off.
- boogEboard

    *

Dumpster's has the best milkshakes & ice cream.
- Jackier53

    *

Dumser's chocolate milk shakes - the best in the galaxy.
- jen1026

    *

Khor Bros has the best as it is frozen custard it is lighter and creamier than Ice Cream and I love when it is dipped in the chocolate to create the hard shell. It is absolute heaven and nothing beats good old chocolate and vanilla swirl!
- 01CoolGsd

    *

We like the ice cream at the Alaska stand on the boardwalk at 9th St. I don’t know if they have milkshakes because we just get the ice cream.
- bill0912

    *

Dumser's definitely has a corner on the market in Ocean City and their ice cream and milk shakes are some of the best around but don't forget to try the smaller shops such as Ice Cream Castle www.icecreamcastle.com on 122nd and King Kone on 143rd. Both have great ice cream, sundaes, banana splits, and milk shakes and I rate the quality right up there with Dumser's. Also my wife always has to get a swirl chocolate vanilla cone at Kohrs.
- Dr_Beach

    *

I go to Dumsers Dairyland at least once (usually more) when I visit OC. I looove their Hawaiin Delight milkshake! It has cherries and pineapple and coconut in it. Very summery!
- Catgrrl

    *

Dumsers is my favorite
- DanaOC21

    *

Great question! There are many ice cream shops to choose from but in my opinion nothing will ever beat Dumser's Dairy Land. There is a location at 120th St, around 50th and on the boardwalk. They make their own ice cream and always have a variety of daily special flavors.

Their chocolate shakes are thick and old - fashioned - the best!

(Go to the top of this page)

05/15/09-  Why stay at Ocean City Maryland over OBX, HH, VA Beach, etc.?

Note: this is my opinion based on my reason and perspective.

Travel Time-  Ocean City Maryland is going to be much closer to anyone in the following states- Northern VA, Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, West Virginia, and New York.  It is going to be anywhere from 2 hours closer to 8 hours closer than a lot of these other options that are out lined above.

Layout and Organization of the City-  Ocean City Maryland is very well laid out.  Look at many of the maps, pictures and resources at www.EllisBeachHouse.com to get a sense of it.  For the traveler that wants to park the car at the boardwalk and have everything within a few footsteps, Ocean City Maryland is for you.  Other beaches are far more spread out.  There is larger space between different attractions and points of interest.  Maximum fun with a minimal amount of time traveling around at the beach.

Quantity and Type of Attractions-  Where do I start.  Okay, deep breath…  Visit www.EllisBeachHouse.com/Resources.html   Ocean City Maryland has Craft Fairs, Golf Courses, Mini-Golf, Water Parks, Theme Parks, Ice Cream, Amusement Rides, Horseback Riding, Beaches, Surfing, Para-Sailing, Horse Racing, Fishing, Great Food, State Parks, Site-Seeing, Ice Cream, Jet-Skiing, Swimming, Basketball, Skate boarding, Shopping, Dancing, Sleeping, Ice Cream, Crabbing, Paint Ball, Movies, Boating, Historical Districts, Churches, Ice Cream, and best of all “People Watching”

Other beaches are going to have SOME of these, but not all of them, and not all within walking distance or a 10 minute car ride.

Free Unscheduled Dolphin Shows-  These are unscheduled, free, and provided by nature.  Just about every time we go to the beach we get to watch the dolphins.  They swim anywhere from 50 feet to 150 feet off the water shore, right at the beach.  They are going up the shore, or coming down the shore, who knows.  Just keep your eyes peeled, and if the other visitors at the beach see them, you will probably hear them talking and pointing.

I think the dolphins hate OBX, HH, VA Beach, etc..  (Okay, I made that up.)

5/08/09-  Unbelievable Cost Savings on the Ellis Beach House vs. a Hotel

Assume 4 adults and 2 kids stay at Ocean City Maryland for 5 nights

--->At a hotel at Ocean City MD, you will 2 little dingy rooms.  (1 room might have a mini-fridge.)  There will be no living room, no decks, and no sunrooms.  There will not be a full kitchen or a washer and dryer provided.

The cost for the little dingy rooms will be $125 to 175 per night, assume $150.  Multiply by 2 (because you are going to need 2 rooms.)

So, $150 x 2 rooms x 5 nights = $1,500

--->Compare that to the Ellis Ocean City Maryland Beach House  www.EllisBeachHouse.com

$1100-1300 per week (depending on the date of stay)

7 nights at the Ellis Ocean City Maryland Beach House, not 5 at the dingy hotel room

8-10 people at the Ellis Ocean City Maryland Beach House, not 6 at the dingy hotel room

3 Bedrooms at the Ellis Ocean City Maryland Beach House, not 2 at the dingy hotel room

Free Bonus- Sun Room, Living Room, Decks, Ocean Pines Community Amenities, and much more.  Plus you can prepare 1 or 2 meals a day out of the full kitchen at an even greater cost savings.

And, just because I am a nerd, another advantage to our property being larger is if you were to come with say 6 adults and 3 kids (vs. the 4 adults and 2 kids in the hotel example) you could split the weekly fee across more people, making it a great time at the beach for everyone, at a much cheaper cost per person.

You do the math…  Any way you add it up, the Ellis Ocean City Beach House is going to come out ahead.  Check out our testimonials at  www.EllisBeachHouse.com and book now while weeks are still available.
